The bottom line in creative design

Dare-to-bare Yorkshire bus drivers from Stagecoach Sheffield took on board design support from Bradford-based This is Chemistry when they revealed all – well, almost – in a cheeky charity calendar.

Preserving their dignity with props including car wash sponges, buckets, even vacuum flasks, over 20 plucky drivers decided stripping off would be just the ticket to raise funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

“It was huge fun to work on the project and a treat to appoint and work alongside celebrated Yorkshire photographer, Monty Rakusen,” says Martin Fisher, a Partner in the Bradford marketing agency, who directed the photoshoot and design of the 2012 calendar.

Chemistry created the concepts behind the images, arranged the props, directed the photoshoot and designed the calendar.

The calendar is now selling fast, over 900 copies on the first day alone, throughout South Yorkshire, priced £6 and can be purchased from selected outlets in Sheffield.

Stagecoach Hybrid Buses

Twenty one diesel-electric hybrid double-decker buses will travel across Sheffield as part of a campaign by Stagecoach Yorkshire.

Chemistry were asked to create all of the branding for the vehicles and design the individual adverts, to promote the launch and the overall benefits of using the hybrid bus. Each bus comes with free wi-fi, and is claimed to cut carbon emissions by 30%. Annually, each bus will use 20,000 less gallons of diesel too.

The new hybrid fleet is initially launching on the 120 service in the city, which travels through Fulwood, Ranmoor, Broomhill, the city centre, Manor Top, Frecheville, Waterthorpe and Halfway.

Chemistry created some stunning designs for the bus T sides, Supersides, and also designed all of the launch event materials to aid the promotion of the launch, which has been an amazing success. On entering Sheffield, it’s been almost impossible to miss the huge 48 sheet adverts, across billboards on the major arterial routes.

We were delighted to be working with our Client Stagecoach Bus on a 2-year UK wide Internal Communications programme called “Ecodriver”.Ecodriver represents a multi-million pound investment in “hi-tech eco-driving” technology across 6500 buses and around 15000 drivers. The technology supplied by greenroad.co.uk is primarily aimed at increasing passenger comfort, reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

Our mission was to provide launch the scheme to drivers staff in depots throughout the UK. We were to introduce their new ‘eco driver champions’, communicate the reasons behind the introduction of the scheme including benefits to drivers and users of the Stagecoach bus fleet. As with all internal communications tasks there was a need to minimise negative speculation and present the benefits of the system in a clear and unambiguous manner.
We developed a whole suite of campaign materials including bespoke eco-driver pin boards (using 100% recycled materials of course), a range of posters, leaflets and a pocket sized 64pp booklet to provide a reference material for the training sessions, explain the incentive scheme, and provide answers to commonly asked questions as well as reassurance as to the intentions of the scheme.

The reaction to the launch of Ecodriver has been extremely pleasing with staff in depots throughout the UK reacting positively to the introduction of the new hardware and significant savings in fuel and CO2 being recorded

Bradford People First

It’s been an honour and an education to work with the staff and team at Bradford People First. Bradford People First was started back in 1993 by a few people with learning disabilities who knew that some changes had to be made to make things fairer and more equal for themselves and all people with learning disabilities. Since then they have campaigned vigorously raising awareness, speaking up and improving understanding of issues which affect people with learning disabilities in Bradford. An important part of their work is Self-advocacy:
Speaking to professionals and People with Learning disabilities in the community and helping everyone understand how to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities. The group has been paid to train the Police, Doctors, Nurses, Schools, Colleges and University student social workers around Learning disability awareness issues like Hate Crime and accessibility.
Working closely in round-table briefings with the team we created a new Brand and website to support their work.We consulted closely to achieve the best balance of usability across the whole site for as wide a group as was possible. Rather than just following established conventions for accessibility that can be unnecessarily restrictive we created and tested fonts, sizes, colours, images and layouts with the team to make the site as appealing and as useful as possible. We also added a simple to use text to speech system with clear a clear UK sounding voice which has been a great success.The feedback has been great and the site is already beginning to grow with the news and projects that the team are involved with.

Stagecoach Nightbus

Great news for party animals and a nice project for Chemistry. Stagecoach have introduced a new late night service for Barnsley and Chemistry were tasked with devising a range of promotional tools to get the message across. Whilst not targeted solely at late night revellers the 1, 2 and 3 am services provide a new low cost way of getting home which means of course that you can afford to go out that bit more often or that bit longer.
