Strategic thinking

When it comes to strategy, we don’t have a fixed formula. Because no consumer or business-to-business relationship is of a fixed nature.

Brand development

Development is the key word here. For us, a brand should be a moving target. Brands should be on the way up or on the way down, never standing still, so we need to be flexible enough to slot straight into the process, whatever stage your brand is at.

Advertising

It's often said that today's press advertising is tomorrow's chip paper (health and safety permitting!). But that sweeping generalisation completely overlooks the fact that the advertising industry in this country has been producing ground-breaking press and broadcast advertising for over half a century. Think the Volkswagen Golf 'mink coat' ad with Paula Hamilton; think Peugeot's 'burning fields' ad; think any Cadbury Flake ad; think Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter for Cinzano Bianco; think of the Nescafe 'will-they-won't-they' ads featuring Tony Head and Sharon Maugham. All of these were made right here in the UK yet all reverberated around the globe (or at least the places on the globe that could receive TV signals...). That makes the average UK consumer – at a deeply subliminal level – a very, very creatively discerning customer, with the youth market the toughest of all.

Research

The old adage tells us that if we don't ask, we don't get. Maybe so, but a lot depends on what and how you ask. Take a group of people and ask "want a free cup of coffee?", the answer will be an almost unanimous "yes". Take the same group of people and ask "would you buy my product six times, cut the coupons out, send them to me and get a voucher for a free cup of coffee?", then the answers will be very different, but will provide clear insight into the attractiveness of the proposition and the willingness of the customer to respond.

We are big believers in PR, whether it stands for public relations or press relations. We view it as a valuable tool in the communications toolbox.

Events and exhibitions

Occasionally, you need to stick your head above the parapet. You may need to attend a trade show, exhibition, host a press reception, engage in a little (or a lot of) corporate hospitality or maybe even run the dreaded AGM.
